Johnstown Artist Relocation Program
The City of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, has designed a program of financial incentives for artists
from all over the country seeking to relocate to an area that is beautiful and affordable. Low–cost
Victorian houses are available for purchase and renovation, providing the opportunity for artists
to live, work, teach, and market in their own homes. The Laurel Highlands in Southwestern Pennsylvania
make a dramatic backdrop for a region that has transformed itself into a center for tourism, healthcare,
and technology. The City of Johnstown invites you to plan a visit. Then plan to stay!
background
Johnstown is committed to the Arts! City government, businesses, and
the private sector (especially the art and cultural communities!) came together to develop the Johnstown
Artist Relocation Program. This wide–reaching involvement is testimony to the community's commitment to
the arts. Attracting artists to classic homes also strengthens and further diversifies the local economy.
Individuals who revitalize homes and settle into a neighborhood become vested in the region, leading to
further renewal by talented, innovative people. For these reasons and more, the Johnstown Artist
Revitalization Program is a win–win situation with long–term benefits for everyone involved.
backdrop
Why Johnstown? Johnstown is an ideal environment for artists and their
families. It offers a comfortable, stimulating lifestyle in the picture–perfect hills of Southwestern
Pennsylvania. It's a culture–conscious community, based on a rich, multi–ethnic heritage, alive with art,
music, museums, and theater. Concerts–on–the–green. Arts and crafts festivals. Ethnic festivals. A world–class
performing arts center. A symphony. And much more.
Johnstown celebrates its unique ethnic identity with old–fashioned hometown pride. On any summer weekend,
brilliant festivals in parks and churchyards welcome visitors to share time–honored customs and varied
menus–halupki, pierogies, lasagna, enchiladas, wonton, doumaides–all served with a slice of apple pie, of
course! Everyone is welcome. We wouldn't have it any other way.
Variety. Vitality. Opportunity. It's all here. Accenting a bright, energetic region
where the arts...and people...flourish.
