The Johnstown Public Arts Alliance is working with the City of Johnstown to initiate a public art program. Recently completed was the first phase of the project, a feasibility study funded by the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts.
The sculpture will be made of polished Stainless Steel, have a 20-foot diameter and a bypass circle design. This circle will emerge from the ground, form a circle, and re-enter the ground on the opposite side forming a continuous loop. The nature of the circular form is gentle and the use of Stainless Steel is bold, this being the inspiration for the name Celebration of Life. Click here to view the Celebration of Life rendering.
Phase II is the temporary placement of museum quality sculptures at selected locations in the Kernville neighborhood of Johnstown, which has been designated by the City as an arts incubator area and has suitable space available. In consultation with City officials, four sites have been identified:
* The Route 56 underpass near the intersection of Haynes and Napoleon Streets
* The intersection of Napoleon and Franklin Streets, near Hickory St. Bridge
* Lot across from the Johnstown Water Authority of Franklin Street
* Lot across from the Community Garden on Napoleon Street
Funding is currently being secured for the first site and a rendering has been created.
